"wow, so you're a vegan...then what do you eat?"

i get this question all the time. my go-to response is usually, "i eat what you eat, minus the meat, dairy, and eggs." although i think this is a fine answer, it isn't particularly informative or, in my case, entirely accurate. i usually don't eat what most people eat. once every week or two i will make a vegan version of a traditionally meat-based meal (e.g. lasagna, pot roast, thai curried "chicken"), but for most meals on most days i have a harmony bowl. a harmony bowl is a meal based on the macrobiotic (macro=large; bios=life) dietary philosophy of eating grains supplemented with vegetables and legumes in order to achieve a healthy and balanced diet (and, by extension, a healthy and balanced life). harmony bowls are not always very exciting or flashy--i'd never serve them at a dinner party--but i believe they are truly the perfect meal. here is my basic version:
simple vegan harmony bowl
serves 1
ingredients:
-1 cup sprouted brown rice (or quinoa, millet, whatever your favorite grain may be, although i would strongly suggest brown rice over white)
-1 14-oz can black beans (or lima beans, cannellini beans, black eyed peas, adzuki beans...you get the idea), drained and rinsed
-1 smoked tempeh strip (aka "fakin' bacon"), crumbled (omit the tempeh for a soy-free vegan meal!)
-2 teaspoons canola oil
-2 cloves garlic, minced
-1/2 cup broccoli florets (and/or just about any vegetable; suggestions include carrots, onions, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts--just make sure you include something green!)
-1/4 to 1/2 cup tahini dressing (recipe below)
-1 Tablespoon curry powder (sub cumin if you don't have curry powder)
-1/2 teaspoon sea salt
-1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
-1/4 teaspoon cumin
-tabasco chipotle sauce, to taste
for the grain:
prepare the rice (or grain of choice) according to the package.
for the legume:
saute the garlic and tempeh in the canola oil in a skillet over medium heat for about a minute. add the beans, salt, pepper, cumin, and a few drops of tabasco. add 1/4 cup water if the beans start sticking to the pan or clumping together (this will also help the spices soak in).
for the veggies:
fill a medium saucepan with about 2 inches of water; add curry powder and bring to a boil. once the water reaches a rolling boil, place broccoli in a loosely covered steaming basket. steam time for broccoli is 5-6 minutes (until it turns deep green), but it varies veggie to veggie, so google the steam time of your preferred vegetable(s) and steam accordingly. don't over-steam! i'd say it's better to be a little under than over.
scoop your rice, beans (and tempeh), and broccoli into a good-sized bowl and douse generously with tahini dressing. mix it all up and eat with a fork or chopsticks.
this dish never really gets old (at least not for me)--try mixing it up with different grain/legume/veggie combos or add sauteed tofu.
tahini dressing:
ingredients:
-1/4 cup tahini
-1/4 cup water
-2 cloves garlic, minced
-2 tablespoons lemon juice
-soy sauce, to taste
combine ingredients in a blender until smooth (should have the texture of a heavier liquid, but it's a matter of preference--add more water to make it more liquid, less water to make it more solid). i really just "feel out" all of my measurements with tahini, so if this doesn't feel right, use your intuition and taste buds to tweak the recipe to your liking.

what's the deal
with black and white horizontally striped shirts?
i bought one over the summer thinking it was a classic look and a good addition to my wardrobe.
now i'm back at wes, and EVERYONE is wearing them. i was in the student the other day and i counted SEVEN girls wearing wearing them just downstairs.
last night i went to a vegan potluck (there were about a dozen or so people in attendance), and three girls were wearing them, plus one girl in a black shirt with white stripes (subtle variation) and another girl wearing a white and gray striped shirt.
did i miss the memo?
when exactly did this shirt become the mandatory college female uniform?
guess i need to find a new thing to enjoy for a few precious weeks before it becomes so self consciously mainstream.
on the plus side, bear in heaven is playing a free show at eclectic tonight.

and autumn inspires poetry
last night on the porch
reflecting, over a cigarette, on a most productive day;
a silhouette on the ledge is nothing if not a languid orchid petal.
but in the rainy haze of early morning
the blossom proves to be
a single fallen leaf
and fall is hiding among the changing foliage
giggling like a giddy child

minimalist breakfast snack wrap

so this recipe was created out of pure desperation. while in the midst of writing an extremely difficult narrative analysis paper on an obscure korean art film, i suddenly became aware that i was fading--fast. i needed a low-fuss, high protein snack that i could make without leaving the house in search of more ingredients, so i opened the fridge. this is what came out.
serves 1
ingredients:
-1 flour tortilla
-tofutti vegan cream cheese
-leftover tofu scramble (i enough to fill a small burrito)
-a pinch of daiya (optional)
-tabasco chipotle sauce, to taste
spread a thin layer of tofutti onto one side of the tortilla and top with scramble, daiya, and tabasco. roll up into a little burrito. now refuel, and keep on workin'.

vegan chili burritos!
the chili recipe is largely borrowed from the "down-home chili" recipe from alicia c. simpson's excellent cookbook vegan comfort food.
Ingredients:
-one 14-oz can of kidney beans, drained and rinsed
-one 14-oz can of black beans, drained and rinsed (you can use pinto beans if you prefer)
-one 28-oz can crushed tomatoes, with juices (i'm not a big tomato fan, so i prefer small, inoffensive chunks of tomato in my chili. if you want more of a tomato presence, use diced tomatoes)
-2 field roast sausage links, diced (i am partial to potato apple, but i'm sure any flavor would be great)
-1/4 cup water
-1 teaspoon ground cumin
-1 teaspoon paprika
-1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
-1 teaspoon dried oregano
-1/2 teaspoon salt
-1/4 teaspoon pepper
-1 teaspoon onion powder
-1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
-1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
-1/2 teaspoon allspice
-tobasco brand chipotle sauce, to taste
-4 large flour tortillas
-daiya vegan cheddar cheese (as much as you want)
pour the beans, tomatoes (plus juices), water, field roast, and spices into a medium saucepan over medium-high heat until the mixture begins to bubble. lower the heat and simmer on low for minimum 15 minutes (i find that the chili just keeps getting better the longer you let it simmer--if you're not starving after 15 minutes, let it sit for a while).
once your chili's all cooked, plop a generous scoop onto a tortilla, add daiya cheese, top with chipotle sauce and roll into a burrito. throw in some avocado, brown rice, or tofu sour cream for even more burrito fun. you can make four of these easy-peasy, with substantial leftovers. use the leftovers the next day to make more burritos (and remember, any burrito eaten in the morning can be a breakfast burrito. just sayin').

traditional family values LOL
there was another wedding on campus today. why anyone would want to get married at all these days is beyond me, but who in their right mind would want to get married at wesleyan? i saw tristan taormino give a lecture on feminist pornography in that chapel--not the most romantic place in the world (but maybe the most romantic place in connecticut).
the obligatory "my new blog!" post
obviously i've started a blog--you're reading it--but the itching, burning, oozing question on your minds and in your drawers must be: why? what insights could dylan possibly have that could improve my life in any way?
the answer is none. i am bored, i have an overwhelmingly large work load this semester, and so naturally so i decided to start a blog, into which i will retch general musings, unfinished artwork, largely plagiarized vegan recipes, internettings i find funny or appalling, and so on and so forth.
na zdravje.
